Majors are required to take this course after they have completed introductory course material and has FW 3114 (Ecology) as pre-requisite. Lecture Objectives: FW 4003 is designed to provide a general knowledge of wildlife management in North America during the past, present, and in the future. Specific topics in lecture will examine the history of early wildlife management (or lack thereof), the skills needed to be a successful wildlife professional, and the current threats to and controversies surrounding wildlife management. This course will be broken up roughly into three sections. In section 1 we will examine the philosophical, historical, and legal aspects of wildlife management. Section 2 will deal with an examination of population dynamics of wildlife. Section 3 with deal with harvest management and the management of habitats for wildlife. General Education Objectives: This course is not a listed general education requirement. Assessment Methods: Grades will be computed based on 500 points from three (3) exams (including the final exam), one (1) homework/computer assignments, and one (1) management report, and participation in panel discussions in class. Grades will be determined as a straight percentage; i.e., 450-500 = A, 400-449 = B, 350-399 = C, 300-349 = D. Exam I 100 pts Exam II 100 pts Final Exam 150 pts (note that the final exam is comprehensive) Homework 50 pts Mgmt. Report 50 pts Panel Discussion 50 pts Total points 500 Panel discussions: We will have three (3) group discussions in class which will be led by two panels of 4-5 students each. One panel will provide support for one side of an argument, while the other panel will support the opposing viewpoint. Grades will be assessed based on your professional performance in the discussion and by the evaluation of your fellow panel members. Management Report: Each student will prepare a management report on the management of a specific wildlife species or some aspect of habitat management for wildlife. I will assign a topic for each report. The report should be short (3-5 pages) and should reference at least 3 sources. The first page should be a bulleted outline of the report. At the end of the semester each students report will be copied and distributed. Class Policies: (1) Class will be held in McEver 206. This room houses the bird and mammal collection which may be treated with numerous hazardous chemicals, therefore; No food, drink, or tobacco products will be allowed in class. (2) Tests will be a combination of multiple choice, matching, and short answer/essay. (3) Students are expected to come to class regularly, but attendance is not a component of the final grade. However, there may be opportunities to gain bonus points during lecture (i.e. pop quizzes). (4) Students must not miss regularly scheduled quizzes or exams without a justifiable and legitimate excuse (ie. Illness, traffic accident, university sanctioned trips etc.). If you know you are going to miss an exam due to an illness or class trip contact me beforehand so that alternative arrangements can be made. (5) Cheating or plagiarism on a quiz, exam, or management report will result in a score of zero for that assignment. Repeat offenders will receive an F for the course. (Plagiarism=presenting work done by someone else, either in whole or in part, as if it were ones own.) (6) It is expected that students will participate in an academic atmosphere (i.e. participate in class, be honest etc.). Lastly, it is expected that students enjoy themselves and learn! Late work: Work submitted after deadline will be penalized at the rate of 10% of the value of the exercise per day. Students with disabilities: Any student who may have physical or other disabilities should see me as soon as possible and we will make the necessary arrangements.
