RESEARCH INVOLVING HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS

Any research that is to involve reagents that are known to be hazardous chemicals are to follow the procedure as stated below.

1. All plans for the treatment and disposal of the wastes generated by the research should be cleared through the Chemical Hygiene Officer prior to the start of the research.

2. All research conducted by students will be in the location designated by their research director.

3. It shall be the responsibility of the research director to train the student(s) in the proper handling of all hazardous chemicals involved in their research.

4. Only small amounts of hazardous chemicals should be stored at the research location. All hazardous chemicals stored at the research location must be in secured cabinets.

5. Upon completion of the research, all wastes must be treated for proper disposal. This can be carried out as a part of the research, or in the waste treatment laboratory, providing that plans for such disposal are given to the Chemical Hygiene Officer prior to the beginning of the research.
