Prior Experience

1982 – 1999          Entergy Operations, Arkansas Nuclear One, nuclear power generating station, Russellville, AR.  Served as a radio and nuclear chemist, supervisor and mechanical construction engineer.  Chemist and supervisor responsibilities were to sample and monitor all coolants of reactors, steam generators and auxiliary equipment for two pressurized water nuclear reactors, to maintain critical water chemistry parameters, to make recommendations for prolonging the life of the reactors and steam generators, and to sample, analyze and document all solid, liquid and gaseous radioactive releases in accordance with all state and federal regulations.  Engineering responsibilities during reactor refueling periods included being the field modification engineer for various mechanical construction projects such as service water cooling piping and main condenser replacements.  Designed and oversaw construction of unit two cooling tower acid control system.  Also implemented numerous other changes to improve performance of plant operations.

1977 – 2003          Served in and retired as a Captain from the US Navy, six years active, being recalled twice, and the remainder of time serving in the Navy Reserve.  First tour of duty served as a line officer on a helicopter carrier.  Over a period of promotion; served as ships deck officer, responsible for the preservation of the ship and lifeboats, and a division of 80 men; served as assistant communications officer and signals officer, responsible for electronic communications security and a division of 20 men who maintained visual communications; served as ships repair officer responsible for overseeing the scheduling, assignment and completion of repairs to the ship, and overseeing the completion of regularly scheduled preventative maintenance; served as the ships overhaul coordinator, responsible to see that all shipyard repairs were performed in accordance with contract, and performed within schedule.  Other duties and responsibilities included qualifying and standing duty watches as Officer of the Deck, Engineering Officer of the Watch, Command Duty Officer and Surface Warfare Officer.  Second tour was recall to active duty for special work, serving as the director of the Naval Research Lab Field Activity, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM, responsible for the initial phase of an EPA Installation Recovery Process, requiring the characterization of four mixed radioactive hazardous waste sites, and the construction of a radionuclide analysis laboratory and a mobile field laboratory in which semi volatile organic carbon, metal and radio extractions and analysis could be performed.  Third tour was a presidential recall to active duty for Operation Enduring Freedom to serve as the Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer for the Commander Mine Warfare Command, Corpus Christi, TX., an operational unit of 27 ships and over 2000 sailors, responsible for the training and safety of these sailors in order to defend against terrorists attack against navy assets, implementing programs such as Texas SWAT training for these sailors, and the first United States Department of Justice coordinated county, state and federal emergency response drill at  Corpus Christi, TX.

Served as mentor and instructor for interested students to conduct Biodiesel and other undergraduate research.

Participated in AEGIS presentations, giving “Neat Chemistry” presentation to approximately 40 grade school students.

Annually participate in Kids University, conducting such curriculum as “Science is Fun”, “Neat Chemistry” and “Chemistry is Fun” to grade school students.
          

                        School/Department Service

Developed a required hazardous communication and new employee training program to comply with OSHA regulations, and provide initial training for all employees of the School of Physical and Life Sciences.  Developed a web page in order to more easily implement the required annual re-qualification for employees.

Maintain qualifications as a Hazardous Material technician, also serving on ATU Emergency Preparedness Task Force, helping in the development of the campus wide Emergency Operations Plan.

Developed and maintain the inventory control system, make all purchases for the department, conduct annual equipment inventory, responsible for disposal of all equipment and the controlled and documented disposal of all chemicals.

Consistently provides support to chemistry, physics and geology by performing repair and maintenance to various instruments and equipment, resulting in significant savings.

Provided large savings of funds by acquiring needed supplies, instruments and equipment from various other avenues, such as federal surplus property assets and private agencies.

Conduct field trips for chemistry students to local industry laboratories.
